LCJ Celebrates Its Return to New York

LCJ marked its return to New York City with a record setting 150 members and guests participating in three days of rules-focused programming and networking.   Thanks to LCJ’s Fall meeting co-chairs, Ed Fanning (McCarter & English) and Gail Rodgers (DLA Piper), who led the development of the outstanding meeting program and served as hosts for the event.

Outstanding speakers helped make the program a success.  U.S. District Court Judge Robin Rosenberg, U.S. District Court Judge R. David Proctor, and Professor Richard Marcus participated for the Advisory Committee on Civil Rules in an important discussion of draft rules for MDLs.  Former FBI agent Michael McAndrews, now chief technology officer at cyber security firm PacketWatch, provided a “tour” of the dark web and its threat to companies and firms.  LCJ General Counsel Alex Dahl reported on LCJ’s recent successes and provided a look ahead at 2023.

On the heels of the mid-term election, LCJ also threw some politics into the mix.  Former New Jersey Governor Chris Christie shared his valuable perspectives on the state of U.S. politics and former House Ethics Committee Chairman Charlie Dent, now with DLA Piper, led a panel on the 2022 elections and their implications for business and legal issues.
LCJ members engaged with outstanding panelists on key topics impacting civil litigation rules.   Panels looked at a range of rules topics:  bankruptcy rules and why they are increasingly attractive for resolving mass tort claims that might otherwise be handled through MDLs; cyber security and the need for comprehensive rules to protect data and business information in discovery; and Rule 702 and the opportunity for states to adopt similar rules on the admission of expert evidence.

The November meeting also marked the return of LCJ’s popular Shark Tank, with provocative new rules proposals brought forward for consideration in a fun and engaging format.

Reconnecting is always important at LCJ meetings. Members and guests enjoyed networking events at The Haven Rooftop and at the Westin, as LCJ celebrated the conclusion of its 35th year.   Thanks to LCJ President Doug Lampe and David Marcus for their remarks at the celebrations.  LCJ also recognized emeritus members and outstanding contributors who significantly advanced civil litigation reform.

For members who had to miss the New York meeting, LCJ’s next meeting will be in Washington, DC on May 3-5, 2023.   Be sure to mark your calendar!  Until the next meeting, please enjoy the following photo gallery from LCJ’s return to New York City.
