EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR
Lawyers for Civil Justice (“LCJ”), a national organization of defense lawyer organizations, corporate and defense counsel, seeks an Executive Director to provide comprehensive management of the association. LCJ advocates for fair and efficient legal rules and policies by unifying prominent defense trial lawyers with corporate counsel from Fortune 500 companies and other allies to support federal and state civil justice reform.
The successful candidate will be responsible for managing and growing the membership and influence of the organization, and will work as an adjunct to the organization’s retained general counsel to develop and advance positions on complex legal issues by fostering the engagement of LCJ members and allies, and by developing relationships with: likeminded organizations; the legal, business, and academic communities; congressional members and staff; and the judiciary.
The Executive Director (“ED”):
The successful candidate will be responsible for managing and growing the membership and influence of the organization, and will work as an adjunct to the organization’s retained general counsel to develop and advance positions on complex legal issues by fostering the engagement of LCJ members and allies, and by developing relationships with: likeminded organizations; the legal, business, and academic communities; congressional members and staff; and the judiciary.
The Executive Director (“ED”):
- Is responsible for the day-to-day management of the organization pursuant to the direction set by the Executive Committee of the Board and the Board of Directors. The ED provides oversight of all aspects of office management and engages in a full range of support services including correspondence, member communications, membership development, and interactions with the Board, the Executive Committee, and the President. The ED is responsible to and subject to the direction and review of the Executive Committee, the President and the Board.
- Supervises LCJ staff (2 persons), including arranging for the employment, termination of employment, and compensation of employees, contractors, and consultants after consultation with the Board.
- Works closely with LCJ officers, and committee co-chairs to successfully advance LCJ projects and activities.
- Works cooperatively with the General Counsel, who is responsible for LCJ’s advocacy initiatives and speaks for the organization on those issues.
- Coordinates twice-yearly membership conferences that engage LCJ members in the organization’s priority legal reform issues. This includes securing speakers and overseeing contracts and logistics for those meetings to ensure strong attendance.
- Provides guidance with respect to the organization’s communications, including publications of LCJ and allied organizations, outreach to print and online media, and social media development.
- Works closely with the membership development committee to develop and maintain stable and growing sources of revenue to sustain the organization, and acts as a liaison with allied organizations to facilitate both regular and special-purpose funding.
- Holds chief responsibility for budgetary and financial operations. This includes developing an annual written budget for approval by the Board, invoicing members, and overseeing financial operations in accordance with the approved annual budget and audit requirements.
- Coordinates the filing of tax returns and other required government filings of the organizations and otherwise ensure compliance with good governance obligations.
- The LCJ office is located at 1530 Wilson Blvd in Arlington, Virginia.
- LCJ is open to remote work, but does have a long-term lease.
- The position offers a reasonable work-life balance, particularly in summer.
- The annual meetings are early May in D.C., and early December, usually in NYC.
- The ability to identify and secure interesting speakers is a necessary skill.
- Law degree and past legal practice is required.
- Hill and/or clerking experience is helpful.
- A network of corporate in-house counsel connections is helpful.
- Collaborative relationship between the ED and the GC is critical.
- Willingness and ability to identify, develop and secure new corporate members is critical.
- Interest in the importance of civil rules to procedural fairness, and willingness to master the LCJ position, is necessary.
