Speakers Added for Sold Out Spring Meeting

LCJ members are set to convene for our Spring membership meeting in Washington, DC, on May 6-8. Thanks to our member attorneys for making this another “sold out” meeting. We are pleased to share schedule and speaker updates.

LCJ past president Wayne Mason and his colleagues at Faegre Drinker Biddle & Reath are generously hosting our opening reception at their DC office on Wednesday, May 6th, from 6-7 PM. Faegre’s office is at 1500 K Street, NW, steps away from The St. Regis Hotel.

We will kick off on Thursday at 8:50 AM. We open with a discussion of the pelvic mesh MDL scandal, brought to light in The Pain Brokers, How Con Men, Call Centers, and Rogue Doctors Fuel America’s Lawsuit Factory. The author, Professor Elizabeth Burch, will be joined by one of the heroes of the book who helped lift the lid on the abuses, retired Reed Smith partner Barbara Binis, and Kaspar Stoffelmayr, Bartlit Beck. Seventh Circuit Court of Appeals Judge Amy St. Eve will be joined by the Bolch Institute’s new Executive Director, retired U.S. District Court Judge Kimberly Mueller, for a discussion with Barbara Smith Tyson, Bryan Cave, on top judicial priorities and concerns.

Following terrific programs on fraudulent joinder, rule developments, mass arbitration abuse, Thursday’s program will culminate with a discussion with Cardinal Health General Counsel Patrick Pope and Crown Equipment GC Todd Penney, who will share their insights on litigation strategy and key corporate concerns with General Motors Assistant General Counsel for Litigation Jeff Koppy.

At our dinner on Thursday, we will recognize one of our outstanding contributors with our Founders Award and salute ExxonMobil Executive Counsel Robert Levy for his service.

After our in-house and law firm breakfast meetings on Friday, we have two terrific panels set. Former Solicitor General Elizabeth Prelogar, Cooley LLP, and Jaime Santos (Goodwin Proctor) will join Beth Chiarello (Alston & Bird) for a discussion of the most important Supreme Court cases of the current term.

We will wrap up with an all-star panel on “gig economy” issues and their wider impact on corporate compliance and litigation, featuring Marie Trimble Holvick, Gordon Rees Scully Mansukhani, DJ Manthripragada, Gibson Dunn & Crutcher, Aaron Tidman, Pinterest, and Colin Wells, Uber Technologies. Toyja Kelley, Troutman Pepper Locke, moderates.
